What I've Been Watching

I'm just going to get this out of the way but for the most part the movies I'm going to be talking about are horror movies. Horror movies are my jam! They bring endless hours of entertainment, excitement, fear and downright confusion sometimes. Today I'm going to be looking at three films: Nightworld, A Ghost Story and Most Likely To Die. Lets dive right in to this nightmare, shall we?

First up is a little gem from 2017 called Nightworld.
When former LAPD officer Brett Anderson takes a job as head of security at an old apartment building in Bulgaria's capital, Sofia, he soon begins to experience a series of bizarre and terrifying events. Once he begins to delve deeper into the building's sinister history and investigate its shadowy owners and past employees, Brett soon uncovers a malevolent force nestled deep in the bowels of the building that will do anything to be set free into our world. (IMDB)

I thought this was a decent film. It didn't blow me away or do anything new as far as horror tropes but it was entertaining. It stars Jason London, with a fairly significant role played by my personal slasher villain favorite, Robert Englund. I'll admit that it was because of Robert Englund being in it that ultimately convinced me to watch it and I'm okay with that.
I would recommend watching it if you're in the mood for something interesting that you don't have to think about too much. This film keeps the suspense up pretty well and there is a time warping element to it but ultimately I think it raises more questions than it answers.

Next is a more artsy horror film called A Ghost Story (2017).
In this singular exploration of legacy, love, loss, and the enormity of existence, a recently deceased, white-sheeted ghost returns to his suburban home to try to reconnect with his bereft wife. (IMDB)

This movie is more of a deep thinker and is more unsettling than you expect it to be. It stars Casey Affleck and is, for the most part, a silent film in that there is very little dialogue. It's from the perspective of the ghost and is sort of a glimpse into the afterlife. What makes it tough is that it's slow pacing and there is one scene (the pie eating scene) that just makes you uncomfortable and you're not really sure why but I think that is the point.
Like I said, this movie is more about tackling philosophical questions rather than being a "horror film." It's definitely worth a watch.

This last film is a slasher horror called Most Likely To Die.
A group of former classmates gather for a pre-party at one of their homes the night before their 10-year high school reunion, and one by one, they are brutally slain in a manner befitting each's senior yearbook superlative.

This one is a little older (2015) but it still fulfills all your slasher desires. Now, while the premise of the movie sounds interesting and kind of perfect for a slasher, it's execution (haha) was not as good as it could have been. It could have been for budgetary reasons or poor writing, either way it was not as fun as I hoped it would be. Granted, some of the kills are pretty gnarly and the killer makes a weapon out of his graduation cap (yep that happens) but it proved to be fairly predictable what the outcome would be.
If you're a slasher fan, go ahead and give it a watch but if that is not really your thing then you can skip this one.

That's what I've got for today. If you have any suggestions of movies you think I should watch leave a comment below. I'm always on the hunt for new horror films. Till next time, stay spooky!
